"Think out of the Box" was a term coined in the 1980's to
encourage companies to look at new ways of doing
things. During these tough economic times,
employers are faced with a paradox.
They need a Human Resources expert more than ever because along with the economic slump comes new challenges Companies may be faced with downsizing, low morale impacting customer satisfaction, litigation threats and more. Or a few creative entrepreneuers have found the perfect company to launch during this downturn and are actually dealing with growth issues.
In the old paradigm, a company would find an HR expert to help with these problems and hire the person to work in a full time salaried position. This may have included offering full benefits, paying taxes, workers compensation insurance and more. This brings in the paradox: Companies can't really afford this kind of overhead during these volatile times.
Some companies have tried to resolve the problem by giving an employee the "job" of HR without thinking through the consequences. What person would want heart surgery performed by an intern without an expert working by her side? Yet that is what is done whenever a person new to HR is given this role because let's face it, your employees are the heart of your company.
It's time for companies to think of the new model for HR. Something that bridges the gap between an in-house HR person and the typical outsourcing firm. Traditional outsourcing is often just an administrative component provided by a payroll service or similar entity. Sometimes it is a for fee membership in an association that provides forms, etc. A few provide in-person HR services at your own company site. Even less provide what O'Peka Consulting offers: Monthly on-site HR expertise. Our HR person creates a bond with your company and their employees. We become "your" HR person. Companies that don't evolve with the changing times may find themselves at a huge disadvantage when the economy picks up and they are "getting by" with cookie cutter HR options. Innovative and progressive companies seek out and adopt new ideas for running their organization.
